Comparative analysis of Chaucer, Spencer and Shakespeare

Q.1) comparative analysis of Chaucer,  Spenser and Shakespeare as poets conduct a comparative analysis of Geoffrey Chaucer, Edmund Spenser and William Shakespeare. Focus on their poetic style, themes, and contribution to english literature and their influences on subsequent literary.

  1) Geoffrey Chaucer ::

      ✓ Poetic style : 

             • Chaucer considered the first poet of English literature, brings many changes to the table in regard to english literature.

            • Chaucer wrote his verse with lines that contain ten syllables and often had rhyming pairs of lines called couplets.

            • The meter, or rhythm, formed with ten syllables per line eventually evolved in to the meter called iambic pentameter, the meter that Shakespeare wrote his plays in .

      ✓ Theme : 

            • The infinite variety of human nature.

            • Class, lies and religion are prominent themes of Canterbury Tales.

      ✓ Contribution in english literature :

            • Chaucer is known for metrical innovation, inventing the rhyme royal and he was one of the first english poet to use the five stress line, a decasyllabic cousin to the iambic pentameter, in his work, with only a few anonymous short works using it before him.

            • His use of English in his poetry helped to establish middle english vernacular as the main stream language of the day.

      ✓ Influence on Subsequent literary :

            • Chaucer is sometimes considered the source of the english vernacular tradition.his achievement for the language can be seen as part of a general historical trend towards the creation of a vernacular literature, after the example of dante , in many parts of Europe.

  2) Edmund spenser ::

      ✓ poetic style : 

           • Spenser used a distinctive verse form , called the spenserian stanza , in several works , including the faerie queene. The stanza's main meter is iambic pentameter with a final line in iambic hexameter ( having six feet or stresses, known as an alexandrine ) , and the rhyme scheme is ab a bb cb cc.

      ✓ Theme : 

            • The key themes and motifs in Edmund Spenser's poetry include love, beauty, neoplatonism, religious devotion, and the use of the palinode. The key themes in Edmund Spenser's poetry include role of poetry in society, the importance of patrons, and the ideal genera for poetic expression.

     ✓ Contribution in English literature :

          • Spenser is most well known for his book length epic poem, The faerie queene. It was one of the first attempts at an english epic poem, which he based on the Italian classics. An epic poem is a long, historical work that attempts to document the events and heroes of a time and place, a country and its culture.

     ✓ Influence on subsequent literary :

         • Edmund Spenser was highly influential both. During his lifetime and in the centuries that followed his death . He is known for creating his own sonnet from as well as his own nine line stanza. The romantic poets, particularly Percy Shelly and lord Byron, were particularly inspired by Spenser's work.

 3) William Shakespeare ::

      ✓ Poetic style :  

         • The verse from he uses is blank verse. It contains no rhyme, but each line has an internal rhythm with a regular rhythmic pattern. The pattern most favoured by Shakespeare is iambic pentameter.iambic pentameter is defined as a ten syllable line with the accent on every other syllable, beginning with the second one.

       ✓ Theme :

           • Some of the most common themes in Shakespeare's plays include love, power and politics, identity, revenge, appearance vs. reality, fate and free will, and madness and sanity.

      ✓ Contribution in english literature :

          • Shakespeare also popularized writting histories, tragedies and comedies as distinct generes with their own conventions with plays such as Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, King Lear , Macbeth and Othello, Shakespeare crafted dramatic works that have profoundly influenced global literature and theatre for centuries.

      ✓ Influence on subsequent literary :

          • William Shakespeare changed the english speaking world forever.By creating new words and tropes , as well as building relationships between writers and patrons , Shakespeare greatly influenced contemporary literature.not only are actors still performing his plays ,but his works symbolism, Wordplay and characters inspire contemporary writers to push their creative boundaries.
