Oxford dictionaries has selected " post truth" as 2016 international word of the year. the dictionary defines "post truth" as "relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief ". 

Post truth is a term refers to the widespread documentation of,and concern about,disputes over public truth claims in the 21st century. the term's academic development refers to the theories and research that explain the specific causes historically, and the effect of the phenomenon.

Why was this chosen.?

The concept of post truth has been in existance for the past decade, but oxford dictionaries has seen a spike in frequency this year in the context of the EU referendum in the united kingdom and the presidential election in the united states. it has also become associated with a particular noun, in the phrase post - truth politics.

What is the importance of  digital literacy?

In todays world driven by technology kids and teenagers are surrounded by an amount of information. the rise of media and the internet has expanded the reach of information sharing beyond channels highlighting the importance of critical media literacy.

Using digital technology is a feature of everyday life in contemporary society. it involves not only accessing and processing information using digital tools, but analysis and awareness of opportunities and issues in the digital space. digital literacy skills empower individuals to learn, change and adapt to the digital global environment. promoting the development of creative and analytical uses of technology, these skills take the user from passive consumers to active and confident ones capable of full and professional engagement in the online world. 

Teaching in the post truth era 

Teaching in the post truth era can be challenging due to the spread of misinformation and the impact of biased information on society. some ways that teaching can respond to these challenges incude :

Teaching critical media literacy 

Education can help by teaching critical intercultural media and news literacy .

Reframing education 

Education can help address the consequences of the post - truth era by rethinking the purpose of education to focus on critical thinking and action.

Creating affective spaces 

When teaching difficult topics , educators can create spaces that helps students develop affective relations with others.

Using evidence-based interventions

Teachers can use data and evidence to support their work and make diagnoses about their students' learning. 

Cultivating honesty

Teachers can encourage students to develop a habit of honesty that's based on sincerity, accuracy, and forthrightness. 

The post-truth era is characterized by a decline in trust in science and an increase in the acceptance of misinformation and disinformation. This can lead to restrictive policies that limit diversity and social justice.
