Through surveillance, propaganda, and the manipulation of truth, the Party not only controls physical actions but also dictates reality itself, demonstrating Orwell’s concern over language’s role in shaping perception.

The absence of genuine religious belief in Oceania reflects Orwell’s ambivalence toward religion and highlights the dangers of blind loyalty to political leaders, equating it to religious worship. Ultimately, 1984 serves as a warning against the corrupting influence of unchecked power, emphasizing the need for vigilance in preserving individual freedoms against authoritarian control.

This analysis of 1984 expands beyond its well-known political critique to argue that Orwell also critiques organized religion, particularly Catholicism, by drawing parallels between the Party’s authoritarian control and religious structures. The three superstates are likened to Abrahamic religions, while the Party’s hierarchical structure mirrors the Holy Trinity, suggesting a connection between political and religious authority. The Party’s use of confession, akin to Catholic practices, highlights how personal admissions can become tools of control, stripping individuals of autonomy. Big Brother serves as a god-like figure, reinforcing themes of omnipresence and surveillance,while Room 101 symbolizes a purgatorial space reminiscent of religious suffering for redemption. Orwell’s critique of the Catholic Church, influenced by his experiences during the Spanish Civil War, underscores his disdain for institutions that justify oppression. Ultimately, 1984 is presented as both a political and religious satire, warning against the dangers of blind obedience and the corrupting influence of unchecked authority in any form.
