Flipped Learning Activity: Ralph Waldo Emerson and his Works

This task is given by Prakruti Ma'am. Teacher's Blog

 1) In your opinion, which of the following factors can define an individual's identity/nature: 1) Their Speech 2) Their Behavior 3) Their Choices of Material Possession 4) The things that they hide from everybody. Justify your answer.

I believe Emerson would argue that behavior and the things individuals hide from everybody significantly shape a person's identity.

Behavior:

Emerson's emphasis on "self-reliance" underscores the importance of genuine actions over mere words. It’s not what one says but what one does that reveals the true nature of their character. Actions rooted in authentic self-expression and personal integrity stand at the core of Emersonian thought.

The things individuals hide from everybody:

Emerson posited that the concealments of a person often point to deeper truths about their inner self. The secrets one keeps, driven by fear of societal judgment or personal insecurity, can reveal the pressures that shape their true identity. He urged individuals to transcend these fears and be true to themselves, a journey that exposes and transforms the hidden aspects of their being.

2)- Do you agree with Emerson's view that every individual is inherently good? If yes, why? If not, why not?

Yes. Emerson, in his essays, particularly “Self-Reliance” and “The Over-Soul,” asserts that every individual is inherently good because he believes in the innate divinity within each person. He posits that every soul is part of a larger, divine essence, and therefore possesses an inherent goodness. Emerson encourages individuals to trust their inner voice and intuition, which he views as a direct connection to this universal goodness.

3)- Quote at least one line from the original essay which you found relatable and discuss how it can be relevant in today's time.

One relatable quote from Emerson's essay  is:

"Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string."

Emerson's quote highlights the need to trust oneself and follow one's inner voice. Today, with so much information and external pressure, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Emerson's advice reminds us to stay true to our own beliefs and values despite these pressures. By trusting ourselves, we can express our true selves and remain strong in challenging times.
